Pet Peeves
I have two main pet peeves. These two things just make me wanna' scream:
1) People who claim to represent you when they don't have the right, the elected position, nor the truth in their statement.
This includes people who are "local activists" who speak before groups of legislators, councilpeople, or even a group of fellow activists and the way they word their sentences that leads the legislators, councilpeople or fellow activists to believe that this one person represents a group of people in whatever cause, idea or action the "local activist" supports. When someone stands up to speak and mentions something about where they live (besides a basic statement, "My name is Moron Dude and I live in Post Saint Joe"), if this "local activist" was not asked to represent the people of the area, a group of people of any sort, or elected to do so, that "local activist" has no right to speak about anything except their own opinion.
The fact that Maureen Rupe wrote in her own words in Happenings way back in 2001-2002, the local pooperpaper, that she and Mary Tees "represented" as Port St. John For Tomorrow, the people of PSJ in negotiations with the City of Titusville regarding their southern boundaries back in PSJ incorporation days — without anyone in PSJ asking them to do so — tells me (as it should you) that she feels she should not need to be elected in order to represent anyone in anything.
That's part of her charm, though, isn't it? Being self-assured enough to go and do and say, "We" when in actuality, it is "I". Being able to "represent" people who don't want her or anyone else representing them without being actually elected to do so? Wouldn't it be just as convenient for the people of D1 to tell Maureen Rupe to go on acting as though she represents us even though unelected? If we do that, we don't have to pay her, but she'll still act the part. She'll still pollute by attending all those meetings and speaking up as though she does represent us. She'll still carry herself proudly through the halls of power and ascend the stairs of government as though she carried the wishes of every D1 resident on her shoulders and she was going to do right by them. She'll still wear the crown of self-appointment. Why not get it for free? After all, she has done her best all these years speaking for us without actually representing us, why not just let her continue to do so?
(Note: I am not saying that we should allow her to sit on J. Roger Shealy's lap after he gets elected to the BOCC: I am saying she'll continue with her activism and we won't have to pay for it. It's cheaper that way since she won't be making decisions on whether to purchase more EELs land above appraised value.)
Or, maybe we're tired of it and want her to stop, sit down, and shut up!
That's part of the drawback of being self-crowned: those you are assuming your self-control over remember your self-crowning and resent it. Your subjects sooner or later rebel and then the self-crowned experience something akin to the French Revolution (or shall I say a "royal dethronement"?). The rebellion comes sooner or later, and usually when least expected. I think this August 26th will be the right time.
2) Willful ignorance is another of my pet peves. What is willful ignorance? It is when you have the opportunity to learn about something that will effect you and you don't learn about it. You do nothing to investigate the truth, nothing to educate yourself about what stands before you; nothing that will lead you into making the correct decision for your future. That is willful ignorance: deciding to stay uninformed about anything from this election to how your town council decided to vote for dog leash laws for pigs and funding leashes for all pig owners (or any such nonsense).
Don't take offense, now. I am not saying you are stupid. There is a difference between "stupid" and "ignorant". "Stupid" in my dictionary (Webster's Unabridged) is defined as "lacking ordinary quickness and keenness of mind: slow thinking; dull". Whereas "ignorant" is defined as "lacking in knowledge or training; unlearned". See the difference? One is something you can fix: you can educate yourself, train yourself, or get training, and you can fix that problem. The other, being "stupid", you cannot because your brain is incapable of processing the information. Willful ignorance is a pet peeve because you have the chance to fix the problem, but you choose not to. That's a perterbance to myself because I think everyone should try to educate themselves on everything that affects themselves, their lives, their wallets, their children and — yes — even their environment.
Don't get me wrong: I am not saying that the environment is all that. But if you look at the truth of the environment and the lies, half-truths and distortions that are out there concerning our environment and the "global warming" lies and the nineteen thousand other lies about the environment, then you'll know for certain that this planet that God — not "Mother Nature": GOD — made is a wonderous thing and He made it capable of doing for us all the things we need it to and that He is in control of it, not man and not anything we can do to it. Mount Pinatubo erupted and spewed more pollution into the air than anyone thought would ever clean itself up in decades and yet, all the doomsdayers could do was stammer when it was all settled and over with not years afterward (twenty degrees cooler summers, etc.), but months later. The same happened with the Exxon Valdez spill: cleaned up by the ocean and things are getting back to normal already. But very few people take the time to look into the truth of the "environmentally unstable crowd" and their "global warming" assertions that lead to their control over what kind of light bulb you use. Look at the truth for yourselves. Look at other websites and do Google searches on global cooling, mini ice ages and those kinds of things and you will be surprised to see that we are in a greater danger of having a mini ice age than of having a desert planet. Don't take my word for it: investigate for yourself. Don't be willfully ignorant.
Next time you hear me scream, you'll know that someone is doing one of my pet peeves and that I have had enough.
